A report released by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity this week says over 30,000 miles of extra high voltage transmission lines are needed to meet European Union-mandated goals for integrating renewable energy production and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, at a cost of $137 billion. About 80% of the 100 known European power bottlenecks are the result of insufficient connections with renewable power sources. Another big roadblock to meeting the EU’s 2020 timeline is the local regulatory approval process which, the report says is slow. While the grid operators strongly back a “fast tracking” order from the European Commission, it has met with resistance from some European energy ministers.
